St. George Episcopal Mission: A Legacy of Community and Resilience in Leadville

Founded in 1882 amid the thriving mining boom, St. George Episcopal Mission has stood as a pillar of hope and unity in Leadville for over a century. From the height of prosperity to times of hardship, the mission has continually evolved to serve the evolving needs of our community.

When the Climax Mine—the region's largest employer—shut its doors in 1992, thousands of Lake County residents faced sudden unemployment and economic uncertainty. In that moment of crisis, St. George volunteers rose to the challenge, launching a small, informal community meal program fueled by donated pantry items. What began as a simple act of kindness quickly grew into a vital lifeline for those struggling to make ends meet.

Over the past three decades, this humble effort has blossomed into the robust St. George Community Meal and Pantry program—serving hot lunches four days a week and providing pantry access three days a week. Today, it stands as a beacon of stability and compassion, supporting hundreds of families and reaffirming our mission to be the heart of Leadville's resilience.

St. George Episcopal Mission remains committed to being more than a building—we are a lifeline, a sanctuary, and a unwavering community hub dedicated to nurturing hope, connection, and strength for generations to come.
